Mike Green signs a new 3-year deal with NHL's Washington Capitals to stay with them
Canadian Ice Hockey professional and defenseman, Mike Green has signed a new three-year-deal with Washington Capitals to extend his contract. The deal is worth $18.25 million i.e. $6,000,000 for the first and second season and $6,250,000 for third year.
Vice-President and General Manager of the Washington Capitals, George McPhee, announced this deal and had a lot of good to say about one of the most offensive defenseman of the National Hockey League (NHL). 54-year-old, former New York Rangers and New Jersey
Devils player said,
"Mike is one of the best young defensemen in the National Hockey League and is just entering his prime. He will continue to be a key part of our team moving forward."
Mike Green suffered last two seasons because of injuries (groin injury and concussion problem) which did not let him play most of the both seasons. He could play just 32 games of the last season (2011-2012) and 49 games in the previous season (2010-2011).
But his performance in two previous seasons from them was exceptional as he had 70+ points in both seasons i.e. 31 goals, 42 assists, total of 73 points in 2008-2009 season and 19 goals, 57 assists, total of 76 points in the 2009-2010 season. About his signing,
Mike Green said following in a conference,
“I think they know what I’m capable of. It was unfortunate the last couple years that I’ve suffered from injuries. But I believe that I’m over them now. I think I got them all out of my system. I think that as happy as I am, that they’re happy and they know
that I’m committed to the hockey team and doing the right things to be the best that I can. It’s win-win for everybody.”
Mike Green started playing hockey for Saskatoon Blades of Western Hockey League in 2000 and played there for five years until he was drafted, 29th overall in the first round, in the 2003-2004 season by Washington Capitals.
He had half a season with Hershey Bears (Washington Capitals’ affiliates in AHL) in 2005 before moving to Washington Capitals, where he has been for 7 years now. He has played 398 games in the meantime, scoring 82 goals, 169 assists, earning him total of
251 points.
