Mike Hesson, the New Zealand coach, is delighted after his side’s victory in the One Day International (ODI) series against http://www.senore.com/Cricket/South-Africa-c757 but admits that the Black Caps need to improve immensely in the longer format of the game.
New Zealand has been struggling to deliver the goods in international cricket over the last couple of years. They were whitewashed in the Test series against http://www.senore.com/Cricket/India-c750 last year and also failed to make an impression in the limited-overs sport.
On top of that, Ross Taylor’s controversial sacking from the captaincy made matters worse for the Kiwis, days before the tour of South Africa. Their premier middle-order batsman withdrew himself from the tour, creating a huge vacuum in the batting line-up.
Having lost the three-match T20 series by two games to one, http://www.senore.com/Cricket/BB-McCullum-c1129 and company were thrashed in the two Test matches.
Hesson, who was the central figure of the captaincy dispute, expressed that his team needs to improve in all departments of the game to be more competitive in the longer format of the sport.
“In Test cricket, we've still got a long way to go,” Hesson admitted. “We're a long way off the pace in Test cricket, we have to acknowledge that, and we know we have a lot of work to do.”
Against all odds however, McCullum’s men bounced back hard in the three-match ODI series, winning the initial two fixtures to clinch the series. The Kiwis could have completed a whitewash, if http://www.senore.com/Cricket/R-McLaren-c2232 had not hit a James Franklin delivery out of the
park to seal a last-ball thriller in the final fixture.
Hesson is happy with the performances of http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Mitchell-McClenaghan-c1975 in the ODI series. The coach hopes that these players will continue to deliver the goods in future.
“We had a few new faces and a few older ones that came back and they were really keen to make an impact and they did,” the Kiwi coach added. “When they came back, they lifted the whole vibe. We were a bit down after the Test series, there was no doubt about
that. We were clearly outplayed.”
