Mike Holmgren plays down hype around Dallas Cowboys’ coaching job prospects – NFL News
Cleveland Browns outgoing president Mike Holmgren has played down reports of arrival of immediate prospects for a coaching job for him with the Dallas Cowboys and told a media gathering on Monday Nov 26 that he was heading home knowing nothing about what
future holds for him.
He said he was unaware where the rumours about Cowboys coaching position had stemmed from but admitted he had met the team’s owner Jerry Jones during a recent visit of the Browns to Dallas. He said the meeting was more sort of an informal chat after the
owner agreed that it was okay for him to appear with him in the public during the game.
According to Holmgren:
"I phoned him and said if this caused any problem for anyone I apologize for that. He said absolutely not. I said, `Listen, every time we play against each other, and it's been a number of times, we've always said hello and been cordial.' I said maybe this
time I shouldn't do that if you rather I'd not do that. And he said, `If you don't come and see me' in typical fashion, if you know him. I said, `OK.' I talked to Stephen (Jones' son) before then Jerry came out. We talked about family and the Salvation Army."
It was his first comprehensive media talk after being relieved as president of the Browns. Holmgren’s contract has expired and as expected owner Jimmy Haslam has hired Joe Banner to replace him as chief executive officer of the team.
The departure of the president was confirmed by both sides after arrival of Banner in Cleveland to take over reign of the Browns’ affairs formally.
It is unclear what next move that Banner is awaiting to make but as he earlier hinted some of the decision would be not that easy for him to make, which he would be making anyway. So far, the jobs of Coach Pat Shurmur and general manager Tom Heckert are
intact, although a wave of uncertainty prevails in their offices as well.
Holmgren has left the team on a high note after the Browns managed to defeat the Pittsburgh Steelers in the last game.
