Mike Ilitch and Detroit Tigers one step away from World Series trophy – MLB News
When Detroit Tigers’ General Manager Dave Dombrowski joined the organisation in 2000, owner Mike Ilitch had just one request for him. Dombrowski’s new boss told him about his dream to lift the World Series title.
After 11-years, the Tigers find themselves just four wins away from that triumph; fulfilling the dream of their owner. Tigers annihilated the New York Yankees in the best of seven games American League Championship Series.
Starting pitchers Doug Fister, Anibal Sanchez, Justin Verlander and Max Scherzer combined to give up just one run in four games to help the Tigers secure a memorable series sweep against their American League rivals.
A lot of credit should be given to the Manager Jim Leyland, who has used his resources very wisely this season. He moved Miguel Cabrera to third base during the offseason, a move that was criticised by the fans and baseball analysts.
Cabrera went to post one of the finest seasons of his career, claiming his first Triple Crown Award. Prince Fielder, who was signed on a for a record $214 million contract, has not taken too long to settle either.
"I saw how happy he was today," Dombrowski said the 83-year-old owner. "He felt thrilled to be here. I'd like to salute our owner and the family atmosphere we have here. I want him to enjoy this victory tonight with his family. I've never seen a man more
dedicated to a community than him.”
He added, "We want to win the World Series now, for what he's done for the city, the franchise and the community."
"It's a big thrill for my fans, you 3 million fans," Ilitch said in a microphone interview in Detroit. "You pumped my players up!”
After crushing the Yankees, the Tigers now prepare to fly to either San Francisco or St. Louis where they will take on the National League Championship Series winner.
Ilitch and Dombrowski raised the ALCS trophy high while addressing the crowd on Thursday. It will be interesting to see if the Tigers can continue their excellent form in World Series to help Ilitch achieve his last personal goal.
