Mike Jenkins to attend Dallas Cowboys training camp – NFL News
Cornerback Mike Jenkins is expected at Dallas Cowboys training camp on Wednesday, July 24, 2012, different media reports have suggested.
Jenkins, who is yet to receive medical clearance from his doctors after he underwent a shoulder injury, has remained in the limelight throughout the last few months.
Entering final year of his current contract with the team, Jenkins is bothered by the team’s decision to select a cornerback in this year’s draft besides adding another through free agency.
Moreover, the team does not seem interested in talking about his contract extension, which is even more tormenting for the defenseman.
The shoulder injury prevented him from taking part in any active drills during this offseason and this somewhat served his interest as well, as he was not in a mood to attend these activities.
He, however, did not miss the three-day mandatory minicamp as the team could have fined him for that. Although he remained limited during the camp, he was there with other players and coaches.
Meanwhile, the Cowboys also reportedly received interest from other teams seeking Jenkins’ trade, but Cowboys owner Jerry Jones promptly denied the request. They had placed him on the trade market during the 2012 draft, but the offer was made when Cowboys
had taken him off the market.
Jones considers Jenkins a valuable asset to the team and as the Cowboys prepare to come with a new defensive strategy in the 2012 season, the role of all cornerbacks on the roster is very important.
Jenkins has been playing for the Cowboys since 2008. He also earned a Pro Bowl selection for his outstanding performance in the 2009 season.
Cowboys’ current roster has three more cornerbacks who are expected to get more playing time this season. They include rookie Morris Claiborne, who has just signed a four-year contract with the team; Brandon Carr, who has joined the team this year on a five-year
deal after parting ways with the Kansas City Chiefs; and Orlando Scandrick, who signed a five-year contract extension last year.
The other three players are locked in for more years, but Jenkins is entering the 2012 season with no long-term job security and it can affect his performance as well.
