Mike Jones added to Pacquiao-Margarito undercard
Yet another bout has been confirmed for the Manny Pacquiao-Antonio Margarito undercard. Philadelphia-based prospect Mike Jones (22-0, 18 KOs) will take on Mexican Jesus Soto Karass, Fanhouse reports.
Jones, 6-foot-1, looked fresh and explosive in his last fight, where he knocked out Irving Garcia in the fifth round. The fight was televised by Showtime and took place in Atlantic City.
Jone’s manager Doc Nowicki confirmed that he should have the contract for the fight today. He added: "I think that it feels fabulous, and it's a terrific opportunity for Mike. We've been asking for him to be matched against this opponent for about a year,
and it was never put together. Now, to fight him in front of the world on HBO pay-per-view is fantastic."
Jones is quickly being considered the next generation of welterweight stars in a post-Mosley, post-Mayweather boxing world. He has already been discussed as a potential opponent for WBC titleholder Andre Berto (26-0, 20 KOs), though it is expected Jones
will take a few more fights before Berto yet.
Nowicki said it was “huge” that Jones was going to be positioned onto the card, which is shaping up to feature a number of high-profile bouts. Highest, of course, will be Pacquiao taking on Margarito for the vacant WBC junior middleweight champion. Also
said to be on the card are Cuban prospect Guillermo Rigondeaux, Kelly Pavlik, and Gennady Golovkin.
Rigondeaux, a bantamweight fighter, boasts only five professional bouts but is already considered one of the best of his division. He is a seven-time national gold medallist, with one of the best amateur records in the history of boxing. He will be taking
on WBA bantamweight champion Ricardo Cordoba.
Gennady Golovkin (19-0, 16 KOs) adds a lot of punch to the card as well. He is the WBA interim middleweight champion, and is likewise considered one of the best middleweights in the world. He is the only amateur to boast having knocked out current IBF
super middleweight champ Lucian Bute, and beat current Super Six contender Andre Dirrell.
