Mike Maddux talks to the press after Cubs interview
Mike Maddux may have withdrawn his managerial candidacy from the Boston Red Sox but the current Texas Rangers pitching coach thought it would be wise to apply for the Chicago Cubs’ skipper position. Direly in need of a change, the club was more than happy
to give Maddux a chance to make his case. The 50-year-old Major League Baseball veteran talked to the press after the interview had concluded on Wednesday, November 9.
The pitching coach has been a baseball player in the major leagues before and he has played for nine teams in 15 seasons. However, none of those teams include the Cubs. Maddux did his work on the Cubs before the interview and his brother, Greg, helped him
out in the process.
"I think this was a unique situation, the first time we ever talked about anything like this," Maddux said. "[Greg] gave me a little background of what's going on. It was very, very helpful."
Maddux’s family resides in Dallas, currently and his two daughters are all in school. Moving to Boston would have been hard for him. However Chicago is very near and he could easily come and go when he needs to. Besides, there was another reason why he decided
to apply for the vacant position.
"Chicago's a neat place," Mike said. "I like being in Chicago."
Maddux has been a cog that has worked well in the Texas Rangers coaching system. Before Texas, the star coach worked with the Milwaukee Brewers in the same capacity for six years. He has experience and he has gotten the Texans to their fifth best pitching
performance in the American League with an earning runs average of 3.79.
The Rangers had the second least hits in the League with 1,327 hits. They also had the second lowest batting average of .244 and the fourth best strikeout count of 1,179.
"I'm very happy with what I do, I enjoy what I do," Maddux said. "I'm administering to half the team in Spring Training, during the season. People have reached out to me [to interview]. It wasn't something that I've reached out to other people. I think it's
kind of cool to be considered."
If the Cubs hire Maddux that could mean their pitching prowess would grow in the coming years.
