Mike Martz dismisses rumours of leaving Chicago Bears – NFL News
Rumours have been circulating about the future status of Chicago Bears offensive coordinator Mike Martz as reports circulate linking him to several college head coach openings.
With interest also coming from Jacksonville Jaguars the offensive coach has come out to dismiss all rumours and sees himself continuing at Bears for at least another year.
"I'm bothered by that," Martz said. "Obviously, I plan on being back here and want to be here, and I'm just going to assume it's all going to work out. That's unfortunate. That's the only thing I can tell you. Just like college
jobs and those things. ... We're focused on this job and what I'm doing. I'm very happy here. This is a terrific place and terrific opportunity for me and I'm enjoying it. I really am. These things ... we'll just kind of disregard, if you will.
News reports have been suggesting over the weekend that Martz was considering his future at Chicago Bears since he has entered the final year of his contract.
"It's just unfortunate. I'm really bothered by it."
The offensive coordinator also discussed the rumours with Head Coach Lovie Smith and has reassured him that he remains committed to the Bears cause till the end of his contract and dismissed any basis for the rumours.
Lovie Smith also has come out to dismiss suggestions that his offensive coordinator is going anywhere and termed the rumours “made up”.
Mike Martz whose play calling is heavily scrutinised by Bears fans joined Chicago in the 2010 preseason and has remained a polarising figure.
He is in the final year of his contract and has already rejected a one-year extension on the deal to stay with Bears through to 2013 fuelling the rumour mill. The offensive coordinator has been linked with head coaching roles at
UCLA and Arizona State Universities while links are also being drawn with the opening at Jacksonville Jaguars.
Chicago Bears have lost two games in a row since week 11 when regular quarterback Jay Cutler picked up a thumb fracture against San Diego Chargers which will see him sit out the rest of the season. Replacement Caleb Hanie has struggled
in both starts throwing six interceptions and Bears playoff berth is on the line as they face Denver Broncos this Sunday in game week 14.
