Mike Moser leads as UNLV Rebels beat UC Santa Barbara Gauchos in a double O.T. thriller – NCAA Recap
Mike Moser posted a brilliant double-double with a team-high 34 points and 10 rebounds to lead the UNLV Rebels to a 94-88 double-overtime victory over UC Santa Barbara Gauchos on November 30, 2011 at Thunder dome, Santa Barbara.
With the win, the Rebels remained undefeated with eighth consecutive victory, meanwhile, Barbara Gauchos dropped to 4-2 with their second consecutive loss.
Moser, who is averaging 15.1 points and 13.7 rebounds per game this season so far, punctuated 25 of his points in the crucial second half of the game. The 6 ft 8 forward shot 12 for 18 from the field, including 6 for 9 from three-point
range, and was 4 on 4 from the free throw line.
"Mike Moser works hard to be a versatile player," first-year coach David Rice said of Moser’s terrific performance after the game. "He is the first in the gym for practice and the last to leave."
Chace Stanback also poured in 19 points on 9 for 10 shooting from the charity stripe and grabbed six rebounds in 37 minutes of action.
Anthony Marshall was another important contributor in the victory with 13 points, a game-best eight assists and four rebounds. Oscar Bellfield ended with 11 points and five rebounds.
Orlando Johnson was the other star on the night albeit on the losing side. Johnson erupted with a game-high 36 points and 10 rebounds for the Gauchos, while dishing out four assists and stealing the ball thrice. The player ended
on 11 for 24 shooting from the floor and 11 for 16 from the line.
James Nunnally posted 14 points, grabbed eight rebounds and handed out four assists in the loss; Jaime Serna contributed 13 points on a perfect 5 for 5 shooting from the field, pulled down five rebounds and had three steals for
the Gauchos, which lost 76-75 to San Diego State in their last game.
Guard T.J. Taylor also came off the bench with 10 points for Barbara.
Rebels shot 45.8 percent (33 for 72) from the floor, limiting the Gauchos to just 41.7 percent (30 for 72).
Both teams started the game at a good pace but UC Santa Barbara started to dominate midway through the frame and held a 27-20 lead with 3:30 to go in the first half. Oscar Bellfield made a jumper and Kendall Wallace hit a shot
from downtown to cut the margin to two, 27-25.
Johnson hit a free throw to make it 28-25 but Bellfield made a jumper the end of the half to trim the deficit to one at halftime.
Moser took over in the second half and punctuated 25 of his points within the first 18 minutes of to give the Rebels a double-digit lead, 69-59.
UNLV however had an extra ordinary fight back in store. Keyed by Johnson, they raced off to a 13-2 run in the last two minutes of the regulation time to tie the game at 71, sending it into first overtime.
Chace Stanback scored five points early in the first O.T. as Rebels held a 77-75 lead. Nunnally and T.J. Taylor then nailed shots from downtown to put the Barbara Gauchos ahead by 81-78, but Bellfield responded with a 3 to knot
the game at 81.
Nunnally again got Gauchos ahead with 3 free throws but Stanback sent the game into second O.T. with a fabulous shot from beyond the arc.
UNLV scored the first four points of the second O.T. for an 88-84 lead before Johnson hit a pair of free throws to cut their deficit to two. Anthony Marshall however recorded the next four points of the game make it 92-86 and from
there, the game went only one way.
