Mike Pelfrey agrees to one-year deal with Minnesota Twins, sources report-MLB Update
Starting pitcher, Mike Pelfrey has signed one-year agreement with the Minnesota Twins.
After being non-tendered by the New York Mets, he was looking for some organisations in order to play for the upcoming season.
Pelfrey appeared in some matches during the last season for the Mets. Unfortunately, he met an injury and went through with a Tommy John surgery.
Resultantly, his expedition for the season ruined.
The year 2012 was supposed to be a beginning for Pelfrey toward becoming a reliable starting pitcher. Far from this, he failed to play through the season.
Had he continued, he might have cemented his place now in the Mets’ rotation for the 2013 season.
Among the possible reasons why the Mets did not sign a contract with Pelfrey during the offseason is the fact that he underwent surgery.
For example, his strength might have affected badly after surgery. Besides, he has to go through a rigorous rehabilitation process before being able to throw impeccably.
As a result, at least during the 2013 season, his presence in the Mets was least likely to prove beneficial for the team. For the same reason, he was overlooked by them.
Usually the pitchers coming off a Tommy John surgery are prone to injuries. That was another discouraging factor for New York while they discussed possible retention of Pelfrey.
Not signing Pelfrey was a bold move from the part of the Mets. He is one of those pitchers that are locally developed by the New York as opposed to bought from other organisations.
His credentials were considered equivalent to an ace. While he made his major league debut, he was conceived as a potential star by some of the team's officials.
There is every reason to believe Pelfrey becomes a solid starting pitcher for the Twins after some years from now.
"I'm on track for Jan. 15. So everything is going well," Pelfrey said. "Tim Hudson came back in seven months (from Tommy John surgery). Joba Chamberlain last year came back in eight before he broke his ankle. And I'll be about eight and a half or so. I'll
definitely be ready when spring training rolls around."
Pelfrey is looking to get ready before Spring Training and play the upcoming season.
It will be interesting to see as to what extent he can help the Twins during the 2013 Major League season.
