Mike Pelfrey’s double helps New York Mets to 4-3 victory against Colorado Rockies – MLB Update
Mike Pelfrey struck a tiebreaking two-run double to take the New York Mets to a 4-3 victory over the Colorado Rockies at Coors Field, Denver on Tuesday, May 10.
Pelfrey, who not only demonstrated his hitting brilliance, pitched for the Mets to limit the Rockies’ offence. Although he was not equally successful in his pitching, the brilliant hitting managed to compensate for that.
He pitched six innings, giving up six hits and three runs. The Rockies slumping slugger, Gonzalez, explained it in his own way. “When you're struggling, whenever you hit the ball, it seems like there's 20 people playing defence."
Tuesday’s game began with New York going hard at the Rockies. Jason Hammel was soon subject to hits. He gave up three hits in the inning. One of the hits resulted in Ike Davis’ two-run homer, something that proved a favourable start for the Mets.
Mike pitched a shut-out inning to maintain 2-0 lead, but it did not continue for long. Troy Tulowitzki homered to right and scored the first run for the Rockies, followed by Seth Smith whose homer levelled the score 2-2.
However, Pelfrey whose fastballs hardly proved effective had something different to offer. The starting pitcher struck a massive hit in the fourth inning and doubled to deep right-centre, giving his team a welcome 4-2 lead.
Pelfrey then tried to maintain the lead with his rapidly increasing speed of his fastballs. Although the effective pitching did somehow limit the Rockies, judging from the Mets’ record, it was possible that the Rockies made a decent come-back.
Mike gave up a run in the sixth inning that brought the lead down to 4-3 for the Mets. However, after that, Pelfrey went hard and did not allow the Rockies’ hitters to go for any other hit.
Francisco Rodriguez sealed the 4-3 victory for Mets in the ninth inning after pitching a shut-out inning. It will be interesting to see how the Mets carry their winning momentum into their next game. The Rockies will be looking to improve their performance
on the field.
