Mike Pelfrey’s pitching helps New York Mets defeat Philadelphia Phillies 7-4 - MLB Update
New York Mets’ starting pitcher, Mike Pelfrey had a tremendous day with his pitching as he allowed just three earned runs with an ERA of 4.60 in the Mets’ 7-4 victory over the Philadelphia Phillies at Citizens Bank Park, Philadelphia on August 24.
Mets added four runs to their score-card in the first inning to take an initial 4-0 lead. Lucas Duda hit a grounder into fielder’s choice to second base, Angel Pagan posted the first run and Ruben Tejada moved to third base. David Wright got out to second
base at the top of first inning. Nick Evans struck a three-run homer (424 feet) to left-field while Tejada and Duda both contributed two consecutive runs for Mets.
In the second inning, Phillies contributed three runs to cut their deficit 4-3. Carlos Ruiz and Michael Martinez both took two collective runs for Phillies when Shane Victorino drove a single-run shot towards centre-field. Chase Utley singled off centre-field,
Victorino added the third run and Placido Polanco occupied second base to end the second inning.
Mets’ batters continued to increase their lead as they got a 5-3 lead during third inning when Wright hit a solo homer (375 feet) to right-field. At the top of the fourth inning, Mets advanced their lead to 6-3 when Wright hit a sacrifice fly to left-field
and Pagan scored a single run. Jason Bay posted one run in the fifth inning when Evans doubled to deep right-centre. Mets were leading with 7-3 at the end of the fifth inning.
Speaking to an interpreter, Evans said, “It's all you can ask for is to get a chance to play and you do the best to make the most of it. It's definitely easier to get in a rhythm the more you play.”
Tejada walked during the sixth inning but the rest of his team-mates flied out and struck-out without contributing any run. Pelfrey pitched six innings and gave up nine hits, three runs with two walks. He had just two strike-outs on his 125 pitches.
On the other hand, Phillies were able to score only one run at the bottom of seventh inning to reduce their lead 7-4. Hunter Pence reached towards second base on an infield single while Utley added the last run for the Phillies.
Despite this comfortable victory, Mets lost the three-game series 2-1 at Philadelphia.
