Mike Ribeiro scores winner as Dallas Stars slide by Phoenix Coyotes 2-1 in shootout-NHL Match Update
Phoenix Coyotes faced their second straight loss of the 2011-2012 National Hockey League (NHL) regular season as Dallas Stars’ Mike Ribeiro scored the game-winner in the shootout decider on Monday, October 10, at the American Airline Centre in Dallas, Texas,
United States.
It was not until the third and final period of regulation that both team’s started scoring and forced an overtime extension, only to be face-off in a shootout.
The first two period saw the intensity of the match as players were booked for hooking, high-sticking, tripping and fighting.
Facing a huge, 6-3, loss to San Jose Sharks during their season opener, Dallas thought that Coyotes would come out fierce and angrier than ever before, but it turned out to be the exact opposite.
"I think I'm going to judge it like this-it was 3 [games] in 4 [nights]. Maybe we didn't have the zip", Dallas Stars head coach, Glen Gulutzan, said. "They [Phoenix] came off a whooping in San Jose and they were hungry. So maybe I'll look at it like that".
According to Phoenix Coyotes head coach, Dave Tippett, he like the way his team played but it just did not turn out the way they had wanted it to.
"We missed the coverage down low", Tippett said. "It was just a shot that goes at the net and redirects in the net. It was probably a game we deserved a better fate, but if we play like that we'll get our amount of wins".
Radim Vrbata, Phoenix’s veteran right winger, scored the game’s first to put the team ahead by one with 14:05 left to play.
Loui Eriksson answered back for Dallas by tying it in the final moments with 28 seconds remaining until the last buzzer of regulation sounded to force an overtime extension.
Not being able to score in OT, Loui Eriksson scored again in their shootout after Phoenix missed their first out of three attempts. Coyotes captain, Shane Doan, scored to level it with Mike Ribeiro with the game-winning attempt left, capitalising on it to
take the match.
Phoenix Coyotes will be looking for a win when they face-off against Nashville Predators on Thursday, October 13, while Dallas Stars hope to extend their winning streak against St. Louis Blues the same day.
