Mike Rizzo aiming at constructing World Series winning roster for Washington Nationals-MLB Update
General Manager for the Washington Nationals, Mike Rizzo, is gradually building a team that ensures the club its first World Series victory since decades.
The 2012 season saw a marked improvement in their record as the Nationals made it to the playoffs.
Through progress every year, Rizzo plans to make sure the Nationals will experience such a season down the line that they claim World Series glory.
He is taking decisions keeping in mind the long-term objective, as opposed to those that help the team put up an incredible performance in one year but fail miserably in another.
As for the ongoing offseason, Rizzo did not have many problems to deal with but despite this, he took some important actions.
He has tried to ascertain that no stone is left unturned for meeting the objective for the upcoming season.
For example, he solidified rotation of the team by bringing an experienced arm in it.
Starting pitcher, Denard Span, has been acquired by the Nationals to replace Edwin Jackson, who played for Washington during the last season.
The Nationals struggled to go deep in the post-season during the 2012 season, mainly because of inexperience of their pitchers.
Rizzo has used trade options so far to address roster needs. Resultantly, the farm system of the team has depleted to some extent.
However, Rizzo is not worried about sacrificing top prospects to other teams for getting established players.
"I like our depth," Rizzo said. "we've got another wave of prospects coming, that I think will at least equal and possibly surpass the package of guys that we've given up in this trade. With the [Matt] Purkes and the [Sammy] Solises and the [Alex] Meyers
of the world. Then we also have a wave behind them of the [Robbie] Rays and the [Paul] Demnys and those type of guys behind them. So, we feel that we're set up very, very well for the long haul."
Rizzo is of the view that exclusion of prospects from the system will not affect them much, as they keep recruiting new players for the minor league frequently.
The kind of intent Rizzo has shown this offseason, the Nationals’ fans can brace for becoming the World Series championship soon.
