Mike Scott fancies a 70-58 Virginia Cavaliers win over Michigan Wolverines – NCAA Recap
Mike Scott recorded a double-double with a game-high 18 points and 11 rebounds as Virginia Cavaliers beat Michigan Wolverines 70-58 enroute to their fourth consecutive victory in the Big Ten-ACC Challenge on November 29, 2011 at
the John Paul Jones Arena, Charlottesville.
Scott was 6 for 11 from the field and 6 for 7 from free throw line. Joe Harris also racked up 18 points on 3 for 7 shooting from downtown and 5 for 5 from the line. The 6 ft 6 forward, who is averaging 14.8 points and 10 rebounds
per game this season, also grabbed seven rebounds and stole the ball four times.
"I think we just settled down and gained some poise, especially myself in the post when I realized they were double-teaming me," Scott said. "I was able to get it out and get the ball to the shooters."
Guard Malcolm Brogdon came off the bench with 16 points, including 13 in the decisive second half. Brogdon also grabbed five rebounds and ended on a 5 for 7 shooting, including 3 for 4 from three-point range. Sammy Zeglinski had
11 points and six assists for the Cavaliers, who played stout defence in the first half, holding Michigan to 40 percent shooting from the floor.
Zack Novak led the Wolverines with 12 points, three rebounds and two steals while Trey Burke totalled 11 points, four rebounds and four assists. Evan Smotrycz chipped in with 10 points and grabbed five rebounds for Michigan, who
have now dropped to 5-2 in the tournament.
Virginia limited Wolverines to 22 for 50 (44 percent) and outrebounded them 33-24. In addition to that, the Cavaliers committed only eight turnovers, including just two in the crucial second half of the game.
“When we play really hard on defence and get stops, that make our offense run, that makes our offense go,” freshman guard Malcolm Brogdon said. “I think we were able to get into a rhythm offensively because of our defence.”
The Wolverines had the better of the initial passage and held a 19-14 lead with 3:26 to go in the first half of the game. After a few docile minutes though, Virginia changed the scenario with a 10-4 run in the last two minutes,
taking a 24-23 lead into the second.
Michigan turned it on early in the second half and converted the halftime deficit into a 41-38 lead with 12:12 remaining on the clock.
Virginia however raced to a 15-0 run and carved out a 53-41 advantage with 6:47 to go. The Wolverines scored the next five points to cut the margin to seven but Malcolm Brogdon and Joe Harris nailed three-pointers to push the lead
to 59-46.
Michigan did not get any closer than 10 points down the stretch.
