Mike Singletary Fired As 49ers Head Coach
Already this season, coaches have been worried about whether they would be able to keep their jobs or not.
Ex-Minnesota Vikings head coach Brad Childress led the Vikes to a horrible season before being replaced by Leslie Frazier.
Wade Phillips was fired as Dallas Cowboys head coach after losing seven of eight games to begin the 2010 season. He was replaced by Jason Garrett.
Denver Broncos former head coach Josh McDaniels was fired after a 3-9 win-loss record, along with a videotaping scandal, after which he was replaced by Eric Studesville.
One coach who does not have to worry about being fired is San Francisco 49ers head coach Mike Singletary. That is because he has already been fired!
After losing 25-27 to the St. Louis Rams and out of the playoffs for the eighth year in a row, the team announced the firing as they returned to their headquarters in San Francisco.
Singletary started his full season as head coach in 2009, when the 49ers went 8-8. This year, they played even worse, and are 5-10. Jim Tomsula, the 49ers defensive line coach, has been named as interim head coach for the final
game of the season, next week against the Arizona Cardinals.
Jed York, team president and CEO, addressed the media in St. Louis after the Bay Bombers lost, but did not comment on Singletary’s status, saying only that he will think about it. Singletary was told that he was dismissed when
the team got back home.
"I want to thank Mike Singletary for the passion and effort that he brought to this organization," York said in a statement. "He is a tremendous person for whom I will always have great respect."
The 49ers hoped to get to the playoffs this year, but knew that it was not likely after losing their first five straight games.
"One of the greatest experiences of my life was having the opportunity to coach the San Francisco 49ers," Singletary said in a statement. "What made it so special were the players. They were some of the most outstanding men I have
ever been around in my life. The coaches were truly professionals. I wish the 49ers nothing but the best. I am thankful to the York family for having given me the opportunity to be a head coach in the NFL. I am indebted to them for that. I am also thankful
for the faithful fans; I am just sorry I couldn't give them more."
The Niners will finish the season with another losing record, their seventh in eight years. The Niners will play in their first game under Tomsula, and the last one of the season, against Arizona on Sunday, January 2 at Candlestick
Park.
Stay tuned!
