Mike Singletary joins Minnesota Vikings
After being sacked from the San Francisco 49ers head coaching job, Mike Singletary has found a new home in Minnesota. He will be joining his old friend and colleague, Leslie Frazier, as linebackers coach and assistant head coach to the Minnesota Vikings.
Singletary’s agent, Bob LaMonte confirmed his clients’ position with the Vikings on Tuesday night, after Singletary said in a radio interview earlier in the day that he was moving to Minnesota.
"I will be in Minnesota with Les (Leslie Frazier)," Singletary said on a radio show. "I will be a linebackers’ coach/assistant head coach."
Singletary was fired by San Francisco with just one game left in the regular season. The team parted ways with the coach after two rather disappointing seasons, including a 5-10 record in the 2010 season when everyone expected the team to win their division,
the National Football Conference (NFC) West. The Hall of Fame linebacker has an 18-22 record in a little over two seasons with the team.
Singletary has a great relationship with Vikes’ head coach Frazier. They were both on the Chicago Bears team when they went to the Super Bowl in 1985. They have been good friends ever since and last season, before the Vikings played against the 49ers, both
men had nothing but good things to say about each other.
"He (Frazier) is a guy that any organisation would be proud to have," Singletary then said of Frazier.
Frazier had been promoted from defensive coordinator to interim head coach after the Vikings fired ex-head coach Brad Childress in November 2010. Frazier had the interim tag removed from his title on 3 January, 2011.
The Vikings are not giving any insight on their process to assemble a coaching staff until it is final. However, Frazier is expected to give his old defensive coordinator job to linebackers’ coach Fred Pagac. Even with that, Frazier still needs to find some
good coaches to fill in vacant spots on the offence. For one, he has to find a special teams’ coordinator, after Brian Murphy left the Vikings to join the Carolina Panthers for the same position.
Singletary went to 10 Pro Bowls and was inducted into the Professional Football Hall of Fame in 1998.
