Mike Singletary takes blame for latest loss and season
After the San Francisco 49ers lost yet another game on Sunday 21 November, head coach Mike Singletary acknowledged that both the loss, as well as the team’s lacklustre performance throughout the season, was his fault.
“Am I doing a good job? Obviously, at 3-7, no,” Singletary told reporters on Monday 22 November, just a day after his team was blanked (21-0) by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. “I wouldn’t even dare to say I’m doing a good job. But it’s not over yet.”
After starting the year 0-5, the 49ers have gone a respectable 3-2 since. However, that has done little to quell the frustrations of the team’s owner, John York, and its fan base, both of whom were extremely optimistic about their team’s chances in the sub-par
NFC West at the season’s outset.
The latest setback for Singletary and his club marked the first time in over 30 years that San Francisco was shut out on its home turf. Afterwards, the coach admitted that his team was not as prepared for the Bucs as they should have been, a disadvantage that
was only compounded by their lack of in-game adjustments.
“The thing I want to say to you is I am very thankful to be the 49ers head coach. We’re working to get where we need to be. Obviously we’re not there,” Singletary told reporters during his weekly news conference.
“My job is to lead, to motivate and prepare to win football games,” he continued. “Did I lead yesterday? I think so. Did I motivate through the week? I think so. Did I prepare? Did we prepare? Our players? Obviously not as well as we should have. Because they
didn’t execute as well as they could have. And that’s on us and that’s on me as the head coach. Why we lost the game, that would be on me.”
Even though Singletary has decided to take the burden upon himself, it’s clear that his team is still behind their head coach.
“Whether it’s the coach, the players, we’re all in this together,” tight end Vernon Davis said, according to
The Associated Press. “We started together so we have to end it together. We just have to keep moving forward.”
