Mike Small takes second spot after round-three of the PGA Professional National Championship
Mike Small, the leader of opening round at the PGA Professional National Championship, carded an even-par 72 in the third round at the Bayonet & Black Horse Golf Club to take the sole second position in Tuesday, June 26, 2012.
Small got off to a slow start and carded only one birdie on the front nine of the course. The back nine witnessed him make huge mistakes in putting and he suffered three consecutive bogeys, starting from the 11th hole.
Small three-putted twice during the round, which was the dismal point of his performance on Tuesday.
In the meantime, Matt Dobyns continued his run of good performance and carded a three-under par 69 to take a six-stroke lead over Small.
“You can’t play defense in golf. He played great, made great shots and deserved to have a good round,” Small said. “I know I have to hit the ball better. Matt’s going to have to help us out a little bit, but he sure is playing well right now”.
Overall, Small looked a bit disappointed, as he needs to go really low if he wants to challenge Dobyns on top of the leaderboard.
Otherwise, the game is almost decided in favour of Dobyns, who is playing consistently right from the start of the tournament.
The highlight of Dobyns’ performance on day-two includes the ace on the par-three 14th hole and an amazing chip from the 18th-hole bunker for an eagle.
“First of all, an ace is not about skill, it’s about luck,” said Dobyns shrugging his shoulders. “I’m just trying to keep the ball on the green, and the ball bounces, and it goes into the hole”.
“Sometime it looks like it’s going to go in, and it doesn’t, and this particular one did. I’m happy I made it, don’t get me wrong”.
The golf commentators believe that Dobyns needs to hold on to his nerves in the final round and just try not to go over par. Otherwise, Small can be a dangerous player, who has the ability of recording good scores in the final moments of any tournament.
