Mike Stanton sparks as Florida Marlins edge past Atlanta Braves 5-4 – MLB Update
Florida Marlins’ pinch hitter, Mike Stanton had an extraordinary day with the bat as he hit a decisive RBI and went 1-for-1 with an average of .263 in the Marlins’ 5-4 victory against the Atlanta Braves at Turner Field, Atlanta on September 12.
At the top of first inning, Marlins added one run to take a convincing 1-0 lead. Omar Infante posted one run when Greg Dobbs drove a single-run shot towards centre-field. During second inning, the batters failed to contribute runs and got out on easy pitches.
Ben Petersen singled off centre-field but Donnie Murphy and Matt Dominguez both struck-out looking without any run.
Similarly, Braves’ right-fielder, Jason Heyward walked at the bottom of second inning but Martin Prado and Alex Gonzalez both ground out towards short-stop position while Brandon Beachy flied out to right-field. Marlins took a 2-0 lead in the third inning
when Infante hit a sacrifice fly to centre-field and Emilio Bonifacio added a single run.
Braves got off the mark during fourth inning and reduced their lead 2-1 when Gonzalez drove a double-run shot to left-centre and Dan Uggla contributed a single run. Brian McCann advanced to third base to end the fourth inning. Braves’ batters tied the game
2-2 at the bottom of fifth inning when Freddie Freeman hit a sacrifice fly towards centre-field and Michael Bourn added a tie run.
In the sixth inning, Marlins went ahead by making two runs while Braves scored one run to reduce their lead 4-3 at the bottom of sixth inning. Petersen scored one run when Dominguez bunted a single-run drive towards centre-field. The second run for the Marlins
was taken by Murphy when Dominguez moved to second base on the wild pitch of Braves’ reliever Arodys Vizcaino.
On the other hand, Prado posted a single run for the Braves when Heyward hit a sacrifice fly and Atlanta again levelled the game 4-4 at the bottom of eighth inning when Gonzalez singled off left-field and Heyward contributed a tie run. Then, in the 12th
inning, Marlins went ahead 5-4 when Stanton hit a single-run drive to left-centre and Brett Hayes posted a tie-breaking run. Murphy occupied third base to end the 12th inning.
However, Marlins led off the three-game series 1-0 after defeating the Braves in a thrilling encounter.
