Mike Stanton’s 9th inning homer helps Florida Marlins overpower St. Louis Cardinals, 8-7: MLB Update
Florida Marlins’ outfielder Mike Stanton had a remarkable day with the bat as he hit a decisive homer in the ninth inning to give the Marlins an 8-7 victory against the St. Louis Cardinals at the Busch Stadium in St. Louis on May 4.
Both the teams started in a winning fashion. The Marlins posted two runs in the first inning when Chris Coghlan and Emilio Bonifacio singled towards the centre-field position and took the initial 2-0 lead. For the Cardinals, Matt Holliday scored on an RBI
single while Allen Craig singled on the shot of Ryan Theriot in the first inning to tie the score 2-2. The second inning remained scoreless for both sides.
The third inning was full of runs as Hanley Ramirez hit an RBI single and scored three fluent runs to put the Marlins on top. Gaby Sanchez contributed equally in the third inning and walked on the loaded bases to extend the lead 6-2. The Cardinals made some
errors for the continuous intervals as Yadier Molina and Chris Carpenter dropped catches and gave the Marlins a huge lead. Omar Infante also completed an RBI single during the third inning.
The Cardinals' centre fielder, Colby Rasmus, and Daniel Descalso both added two runs and lessened the Cardinals’ third inning trail to 6-4. The Marlins were scoreless from fourth to eighth inning while the Cardinals re-tying the scorecard with 6-all in the
sixth inning when Albert Pujols drove a two-run grounder with the loaded bases.
The Marlins made some amendments in the roster which helped in their convincing win. Infante was moved down to seventh spot while Bonifacio was promoted to the second position and went ahead of his last performance with three hits on five at-bats. Bonifacio
had a poor record with bat in the last seven games as he went 12-for-27 with batting average of .350, but now he has improved his game to a great extent.
The Marlins led off in the ninth inning with 8-6 when Stanton struck a tie-breaking drive with a solo homer. Jon Jay also hit a one-run homer in the ninth inning for the Cardinals, but ended the game with 8-7. Carpenter was shaky with the ball as he allowed
six runs on 10 hits in his six inning pitches. He struckout four batters and gave away four earned runs which resulted in his Club’s loss.
