Mike Stanton’s grand slam gives Florida Marlins 7-3 win over the New York Mets – MLB Update
Mike Stanton hit a magnificent grand slam on Monday, August 1 to help the Florida Marlins beat the New York Mets 7-3 at Citi Field.
The three-game series’ first encounter had all the ingredients of excitement as the Marlins, after having a lead, went down only to bounce back in the last inning.
"It is deflating a little bit, but you've got to give our guys credit the way they rebounded and came up with four straight hits," Florida manager Jack McKeon said. "They didn't give up and say, 'Oh, tough luck.' We went right after them."
Mike Stanton, who had had not a particularly great week came up with something special, and make it known how he felt about it. “I was pretty upset over that," Stanton said. "I just told myself, I'm going to have a chance to redeem it, and this next inning
just make the best of it."
The first of three-game series kicked off with Gaby Sanchez’s sacrifice fly that earned the Marlins a run, giving it an early lead which was relatively stable considering the fact that Javier Vazquez pitched some good innings to maintain the lead.
With Vazquez being in a dominant position among the two starters of the night, Mike Pelfrey was subject to another hit by none other than Gaby Sanchez once again in the third inning. Sanchez singled to centre to earn his and team’s second run.
With the end of third inning, Marlins had a 2-0 lead which was taken to 3-0 by Bryan Petersen with a sacrifice fly hit. Jason Bay was the first to score for the New York Mets in the fourth inning, bringing the lead down to 3-1.
Vazquez did not allow the Mets hitters to open their bats. Entering into ninth inning with 3-1 lead, the Marlins’ closer Leo Nunez did not probably anticipate the surprise awaiting him. Lucas Duda hit a two-run homer that levelled the score in the supposedly
last inning of the game.
It was then Mike Stanton who completely changed the map of the game with his grand slam hit, giving the team 7-3 lead. The 4-hit four run inning of Jason Isringhausen dealt a blow to the team.
It was Burke Badenhop of the Florida Marlins who threw a strong ninth inning to conclude the game with a winning 7-3 lead, giving the Marlins their first victory in the series.
