While going through the history of greyhound racing, nobody can neglect the winnings and achievements of the renowned hound, Mike The Miller. The brindle dog was the weakest one among the litter of ten pups born on the 29th of June, 1926.
Participating in a few events, the hound has attained numerous triumphs, for owner, Father Brophy and Arundel Kempton. In 1928, the hound began his career in Ireland, which is also his birth place.
Shelbourne Park was the race track, from where he initiated his racing career. The first win acquired by the famous champ was in the Punchestown Stakes, scheduled at Shelbourne race track.
After hitting the wire four times on the dirt track of Shelbourne Park and at Harold’s Cross in the year 1929, Mike The Miller was shifted to United Kingdom.
The first quest in which he was sent in on English soil was the English Greyhound Derby. The son of Glorious Event out of Na Boc Lei, Mike The Miller proved himself as a real go getter, winning the first Derby chase.
The victorious hound not only won the English Greyhound Derby, but he also accomplished in setting new figures in world record, with timings of 29.80 seconds.
Later on he was also declared as the first greyhound, who concluded his 525 yards' chase in 30 seconds.
After being sold to his new owner, Albert Williams, Mike The Miller was placed in the International Sweepstakes at West Ham and the First International Derby Sweepstakes Derby on the dirt track of Wimbledon.
In the year 1930, the hound won six notable races, the Wembley Spring Cup at Wembley racing course being one of them. In Wimbledon, he was honoured with the purse, hitting the wire in the Loafer Trophy.
He earned three victories on the White City race track, the Farndon Cup, Welsh Greyhound Derby and lastly, the English Greyhound Derby.
Through the Derby win, the hound attained his first title of 2x Winner of the English Greyhound Derby.
1931 was sadly the last year of his career, before he got retired form greyhound racing.
Mick The Miller has triumphed 10 times, against prominent hounds and earned numerous rewards like the gold cup and a purse of £1,100 against Bishop Dream.
Till 1974, his record of consecutive wins in nineteen races has also been sustained, along with being declared as the first hound to win the English Greyhound Derby as well as the St Leger.
In total, he has won twenty four racing trophies, 6 gold and 18 silver trophies. He has set three track records while covering 525, 550 and 600 yards.
Later on, he also started appearing in films, and is remembered as one of the utmost and ultimate star of greyhound racing.
