Mike Trout, Jered Weaver shine as Los Angeles Angels defeat Texas Rangers 1-0 – MLB Update
Mike Trout’s line drive single marked the Los Angeles Angels shut-out victory over their rivals Texas Rangers 1-0 at Angels Stadium of Anaheim on Thursday, July 19 to take the series 2-1.
In the bottom of the second inning, centre-fielder Mike Trout entered the field for his first at-bat and touched a ball to centre-fielder, Endy Chavez, who committed an error to allow Howard Kendrick to score the game deciding run. It proved the first and
the last run of the game, as starters from both sides played strong games. However, the Rangers could not remove this run and lost their second straight game.
The Angels’ starter Jered Weaver did not allow any run and struck-out six batters however went for seven hits and two walks over seven innings to snatch his 13th win of the season. He tossed 74 strikes of 122 pitches to help improve his record
to 13-4 with 1.81 ERA in 2011.
"You knew it was going to be a battle because C.J. is having a great year and he's turned himself into a great pitcher," Weaver said. "It's been fun going out there and battling. It's been going good so far, and hopefully we can keep it rolling and limit
those runs."
His reliever Scott Downs and closer Jordan Walden also remained scoreless in their one innings spell. Downs finalised his inning only in eight pitches while Walden took 22 pitches to record his 23rd save of the season.
The Rangers’ starter C.J. Wilson was also good in pitching but his only allowed run in the bottom of the second inning proved costly. He lost his fourth game of the season in spite of tossing two-hitter eight innings, in which he also struck-out eight batters.
His 73 strikes of 112 pitches did not prove valuable for him as his record declined to 10-4 with 2.94 ERA.
"I felt like I made a couple of mistakes, so I wasn't perfect. If you're not perfect, you can't expect to win," Wilson said. "You always need offense to score, and we just didn't score today. So whether I gave up one run or five runs, it's the same result
-- a loss."
The Angels’ designated hitter, Torii Hunter was not happy at all of the game played by his pitcher.
Taking this series will boost the Angels’ confidence in the up-coming games against the same opponents. They have to enter the field ten times of their last 41 regular season games. The Angels’ manager Ron Washington believes it a strong battle, especially
three games that will be played at Anaheim.
