If these 2 guys met instead of Holmes who took 14 rounds to dispose of Gerry, and even then it was heat exhaustion as well that beat Cooney, would the young Titan called Mike Tyson have had a quicker result,if indeed he won?

  1. You must be joking because Cooney was one his whole career.  Mike would have taken no more than 3 rounds to dispose of this imposter.

  2. Yes I believe he would of won in 8 rounds

  3. i think YES.

  4. Tyson would have knocked him out before round 6

  5. Cooney would have beat the midget up!

  6. h**l yeah, cooney would have been tysons B****.tyson would ko cooney in 3rds

  7. This would have been a huge mismatch for cooney, his style was tailor made for tyson, cooney had the bad habit of staying in one place and trade punches with opponents and against tyson such tactic is equivalent to suicide,  Tyson would have used his peek a boo style defense to dodge and weave cooney 's punches and would have landed his vicious hooks and uppercuts all over cooney, sending him to the canvas within the first four rounds (and that's stretching it) cooney was a decent boxer but tyson had all the tools and the style to win this fight by vicious knock out.

  8. If you remember my post I like Cooney a lot but he would have only had one chance and that would be to land that sled hammer of a left hook  while Tyson was coming in Tyson by KO int he 2nd round

  9. Tyson would knock Cooney out early.

Although Cooney had a wicked left hook he also had a suspect chin.

Tyson was always good against taller fighters. He would come in under Cooney's jab (which he always needed to use to set up his left hook) and knock out Cooney with his own leaping left hook.

I saw them both fight and believe me it's the truth!

  10. Cooney woud be asleep before the end of round 2.  He could hit big but he had no defense and a glass jaw (just watch the Michael Spinks fight).  Young Mike Tyson had a great defense and was able to slip punches and deliver fast accurate and devastating combinations that would have ripped Cooney's head clean off.  The only thing Cooney could do to make it easier on himself would be to bring a pillow.

  11. Tyson would have won it based upon his quickness, but the Cooney that lasted 13 rounds with Holmes would probably have gone around 13 with Tyson or anyone.

I also saw Cooney have a really awkward fight in 1978 against SD Gordon.  Gordon did not throw a punch, so after 4 rounds he was disqualified by the referee.  Cooney still could not do much with him, despite the fact that Gordon did not throw a punch.

Therefore, I was shocked when Cooney fought the fight of his life against Holmes, going 13 rounds with Holmes, despite Holmes' tremendous speed advantage.  Cooney never did anything close to this again.

Cooney even in that fight just was not quick enough to beat Mike Tyson.

  12. Cooney, as much as I liked him for the spirited work he put in with Larry Holmes, and I respect him...would be MAULED by a prime Mike Tyson.

First, YOUNG Mike Tyson hit five times harder than Larry Holmes did. Thats a fact and Im sorry.

Second, Cooney wasnt against getting in a fight in a phone booth..as a matter of fact he preferred it. And that would have been his undoing. They would be okay for about a round...but Mikes constant "downstairs to upstairs" attacks in his prime were midevil. Cooney would have had to start backing out of the pocket from the pressure.

This would end up leading to his demise..because although young Tyson hit viciously in the pocket...his TRUE POWER came when he could move forward and hit. And as Cooney had to deal with Mikes power and back out...Tyson would move forward and cut him apart.

Cooney is a big guy...but Tyson fought bigger...and slammed them into the ground. It always took skilled boxers with a serious plan to beat him. Holyfield in the first fight figured out that Tysons best power came when he was moving forward..and he walked him back.

I just dont see Cooney having that kind of plan.
