  1. First of all, look up the term honorary doctorate. It has nothing to do with having a PHD going to college or anything. People who have put in a lot of time in a specific field they have done for years get them. It really doesn't mean anything, they don't graduate.

    Spike Lee has gotten honorary doctorate degrees because he's directed so many movies. He didn't actually go to these colleges and study. They just HONOR (key word) his commitment to the film industry.

    an honorary degree is bestowed for service to the issuing institution, sometimes for addressing the commencement.

    There is a very clear distinction between the 'earned' doctorate' and the honorary.....
