Mike Weir desperate to get back into PGA Tour
Recovering from his elbow surgery prominent golfer Mike Weir intends to find a place in the PGA Tour on permanent basis.
The Canadian golfer had to forcefully marginalise himself from the AT&T Pebble Beach golf championship because of his injury.
Missing the opportunity of participating in Pebble Beach was coupled with his subsequent disqualification from Northern Trust Open because of his failure to grab a sponsor exemption.
However, he now intends to make his return. The lefty from Bright’s Grove, Ontario, is looking forward to make his entry on the basis of ‘non-exemption medical extension’.
Under this extension he will be provided three starts to safeguard a Tour Card license as well as earn whooping $644,854.
According to Weir’s agent, Danny Fritz, who is also the Vice-president of IMG Canada, that extension has mainly been provided after looking at the financial figures Weir was able to earn in the last Canadian tour.
The number of events he took part in during the entire timeline of the event have also been considered when providing the extension.
“He can’t play every tournament,” Fritz added. “Pebble was an exemption, but the Tour also looks at it as a ‘start.’ So regardless of whether it was an exemption or he got in on his own merit, it’s a start, and he’s only allowed three starts”.
The decision, however, has been received very critically in the mainstream of golf. At the same time, Weir has also acknowledged the criticism that he is being made a target of.
On his own website Weir wrote that he was expecting to get an exemption for the Northern Trust.
However, keeping in mind different organisational constraints, he was deprived of the opportunity of not playing the event.
It is worth mentioning here that, following his injury in 2010, he was provided the chance to compete in five tournaments to earn an amount of $227,885.
With the help of this amount he would have equalised with the amount secured by the 125th player on list.
This would have further provided the player with the chance of once again enjoying all other privileges that his opponents are currently enjoying.
