Mike Weir stands at the 29th position after the first round of the Masters
Mike Weir was unable to putt well, as he recorded equal-par strokes on most of the holes in the first round of the Masters held on Thursday, April 5, 2012.
The first round of the Masters is over now. A tough battle among 96 players at the Augusta National Golf Club cheered all the spectators.
Weir was surrounded by tough rivals, and scored a 72 on Thursday. He also faced difficulties scoring on the greens and putting.
“There were a lot of good signs. I missed some real makeable putts at 7, 8, 10, 11, but I kept giving myself chances, and I finished well,” Weir said.
The 41-year-old Canadian professional golf player teed off averagely and finished tied for the 29th on the leaderboard.
On the front nine holes of the course, he was unable to make a birdie. He bogeyed on the 7th hole and remained at-par on the rest of the eight holes.
He again faced difficulty in scoring on the back nine holes of the course. He carded two unimpressive bogeys on the 10th and 11th hole.
After hitting some poor shots, he improved his swing and putting. He displayed three long distance birdies on the 12th, 13th and 15th holes impressively. Then, he was at par till the end of the day.
The 2003 Masters champion has played four PGA tournaments in the current year. He missed the cut and could not pass the second round.
Later, he spent most of his time on the golf course and practised for the first major of the year. He worked hard and planned to be among the leading players at the Masters.
“It’s probably a combo. I feel very comfortable around here. I knew if I had some semblance of a game going, and hit some fairways, I could shoot a decent score,” Weir said.
However, Weir enjoyed his first round and this was the best learning phase, according to him. After missing the cut in three tournaments, finishing on the 29th position is an impressive start.
“It’s the best round of golf I’ve played this year,” he said. “The 68 I had in Spain was not on as difficult a golf course as this”.
The second round will be played on Friday and all the players are doing their best. The $8,000,000 purse and green jackets are a great source of attraction for all the field members.
