Mike Woodson set to sign a multi-year deal with the New York Knicks within a week – NBA News
Mike Woodson could sign a multiyear deal with the New York Knicks within this week, revealed a source with knowledge of the situation.
The source talked to the Associated Press on condition of anonymity as the negotiations are not final, but did say that there is a chance the deal would be completed within the week.
The New York Post also reported on Tuesday that both sides were committed to finishing the negotiations and signing the contract before the Memorial Day weekend.
Woodson led the New York Knicks to an 18-6 win loss record in the regular season, helping them clinch a playoff spot. The Knicks were then defeated by the Miami heat 4-1 in the first round of the playoffs. Woodson took over as
interim coach after former coach Mike D’Antoni resigned midway through the season when the Knicks were 18-24 and their playoff spot seemed to be far away. Woodson was assistant to D’Antoni at that time.
He was also the assistant coach to Larry Brown in Detroit when the Pistons won the 2004 NBA Championships. He then went to Atlanta as head coach of the Hawks for six years, from 2004 to 2010.
He helped the Hawks improve their performance each year, and led them to a 53-29 record in the 2009-10 regular season.
However, he was replaced after the season in 2010, after Atlanta had crashed out of the Eastern Conference Semi Finals for the 2nd year in a row. He did not work in the NBA for the 2010-2011 season and came as assistant
to D’Antoni at the beginning of this season.
Woodson was expected to be signed as the new coach after the season finished as he had turned around the season for the New York Knicks. Woodson also seemed to have the approval of star players Carmelo Anthony, Amare Stoudemire
and Tyson Chandler in the Knicks line up.
His case was further strengthened when Glen Grunwald was made the permanent General Manager of the Knicks team, after having served in the name position in an interim capacity. Grunwald and Woodson were college teammates in Indiana.
Woodson has himself played for the New York Knicks, being a first round draft pick of the Knicks in 1980. He has a 224-292 career record as head coach.
