Mikha Singh ready to shine at Omega Dubai Desert Classic
Jeev Mikha Singh, who has recently recovered from his injuries, said that he is completely fit to play the Omega Dubai Desert Classic. The tournament is slated to be held from February 9-12, at the Emirate Golf Club.
Indian Singh faced a string of debilitating injuries hurting his game. Now, with the start of the tournament at Dubai, Singh can make the most of his improved physical condition.
The $25 million Omega Dubai Desert is one of the prestigious tournaments on the European Tour that features leading players.
Sharing his thoughts about the tournament and his recovery, Singh said that he wants to win the title.
However, he added, a good finish will also be acceptable, given the strong field expected to gather at Emirates Golf Club.
“The aim is to try and win the tournament. It’s been a long since I felt that fit and healthy. I know I am close, but when it comes to winning a tournament, it also depends on the mindset that week and how you deal with the pressure,” he said.
Dispelling concerns about his form, Singh said that he still believes in his game and Dubai can be a springboard for him to move ahead.
Chronic physical problems kept the 40-year-old Singh off training for long and he lost his putting skills.
He was keen to point out that, owing to intense practice, he has managed to regain his lost form and now he seems good at hitting the ball again.
Expressing his confidence in his game, Singh said that he has a gut feeling that he can shine at Dubai.
Emirate Golf Club will typically pitch some of the big names against each other. Lee Westwood, who currently ranks 2nd in the world rankings, will play the tournament.
Moreover, Fred Couples, who is best known for his captaincy of the US team that won the Presidents Cup last season, will also be appearing on the course.
Singh said that he likes to play among prominent players and the event at Dubai will give him this opportunity.
Singh was performing well before being hit with injuries to his ankle, wrist and back. He managed to rack up a victory on the European Tour in 2008.
“Injuries did a take toll on my body. I won’t be able to play that many tournaments in a season as I used to, but good thing is that I have achieved the level of fitness I need to compete on the Tour,” said the 40-year-old star.
Singh acknowledged that he could not recover without the patronage of his father, who has been a source of inspiration for him.
Vice Chairman and CEO of golf in Dubai, Muhammad Juma said: “We are delighted to welcome back the ace Indian golfer, who is a well-established international star with a tremendous fan-following”.
