Mikhail Elgin moves into round two; ousts Herkko Pollanen in round one – IPP Open 2011 CH
Mikhail Elgin, Russian veteran, clear his opening round fixture of IPP Open 2011 CH on Monday, 21st of November, beating 17-year-old Finn, Herkko Pollanen in straight sets, 7-6(3), 6-4, in an hour and 31 minutes Hard
indoor court match at Tali, Helsinki, Finland.
Pollanen did put up a good effort, however, could not pull off a winner. Russian, on the other hand, played comparatively better this time as his last ten much run had been not to successful.
Elgin, Russian 30-year-old, won the service toss and took his side to start up the fixture. Serving out the first game of the match, Russian veteran rolled down the scoreboard, 1-0. Carrying on, Elgin then mustered away a spectacular
breakpoint in game two, capturing the first two games of the set, 2-0.
Russian then captivated another winner, game three, of his second service game extending his lead from 2-0 to 3-0. However, the 17-year-old Finn did not give up his fight yet. Serving out his first win of the match, 1-3, Pollanen
broke his rival to cut the lead to 2-3.
Evening up the scores, Finn 17-year-old finally managed to cut back the lead, 3-3. Winning games of respective serves, the two levelled up at 4-4 and then on 5-5, with the set eventually going into a tiebreaker. Elgin served first
and bagged the first two points.
Pollanen did capture some points, three, however, could not overcome the Russian rival and lost the tiebreaker, 7-5, and the set, 7-6(3) and led the match.
Moving on with the fixture, the two ignited again, as Pollanen took out the first game of the second set rolling down the scoreboard, 1-0. Following the 17-year-old, Elgin levelled up right away bagging game two, 1-1. Moving on,
the two pocketed a game each to level up again at 2-2.
However, the tables turned at that moment as Pollanen served game five, however, was unable to put up a strong offence and broke down. Leading the scores, 3-2, Elgin served out his fourth service game of the second set to extend
his lead further to 4-2.
With just two more game left to finish off the set, Elgin served out two of the last four game, game eight and ten, to finishing off the second set of the match 6-4, winning the fixture in straight sets.
Making his way into the second round of the event, ATP Challenger Tour, Elgin now sits comfortable as his second round rival seat is to be filled up by the winner of the first round match between Matthew Ebden and Adrian Ungur.
