Mikhail Mikhailovich Youzhny, a look at Malaysian Open champ this season
Born on 25 June 1982 in the city of Moscow, Mikhail Mikhailovich Youzhny is a professional tennis player from Russia. The twenty-eight year old Youzhny is well known for his accuracy and all court style of play.
The Russian has been coached by Boris Sobkin for a period of seventeen years. He is currently ranked number eight in the world by the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP).
As far as his performance this season is concerned, the Russian started the year by playing at the Australian Open competition as his first tournament in 2010. In the opening round clash, the right handed Mikhail successfully got the better of Richard Gasquet
in an epic five setter clash. The final match score was 6-7(9), 4-6, 7-6(2), 7-6(4), 6-4.
He next played Jan Hajek and comfortably brushed him aside in three sets to advance into the third round in Melbourne. The final match score was 6-2, 6-1, and 6-1. The Russian however, couldn’t play his next match at the 2010 Aussie, as he withdrew from
the competition as a result of his wrist injury.
After recovering, the Moscow resident next competed at the 2010 ABN AMRO World Tennis Championship, as his second competition of the season where he successfully reached the title battle after getting the better of world number three Novak Djokovic from
Serbia in the semi final clash. The final match score was 7-6(5), 7-6(6).
In the title battle, the Russian trailed behind his Swedish foe, Robin Soderling 4-6, 0-2 before announcing his withdrawal as a result of a hamstring injury. His final run however, improved his ATP World rankings to number fifteen in the World after this
tournament.
In his next competition, the 1.83 meters tall Mikhail advanced into his second successive final at the 2010 Dubai Tennis tournament. On his way into the finals, the Russian hammered down Lukas Lacko, Jurgen Melzer, Janko Tipsarevic as well as Bjorn Phau.
However, in the final match, Youzhny was defeated at the hands of second seed Novak Djokovic from Serbia, who also won the title last year, in three sets. The final match score was 5-7, 7-5, 3-6. It was Mikhail’s fourth final defeat in a row in an ATP World
Tour 500 competition.
World number eight, Mikhail Mikhailovich Youzhny next took part in the BMW Open competition, held in Munich. The Russian once again reached the final of the competition and this time defeated Marin Cilic in three sets to capture the title in Germany. The
final match score was 6-3, 4-6, 6-4. It was Mikhail’s third visit to the finals at this competition having previously lost at the hands of Tomas Berdych back in 2009 and Philipp Kohlschreiber back in 2007.
At the clay court French Open tournament, Mikhail was seeded number eleven to win the title. The twenty-eight year old Youzhny did well to make his way into the round of sixteen in Roland Garros where he defeated his eight seed opponent Jo-Wilfried Tsonga
after he withdrew during the clash and thus advanced into his first ever Paris quarters.
At the year’s final Grand Slam, the United States Open in New York, Mikhail Youzhny after a stunning performance right from the start was dispatched by the World number one and eventual champion, Rafael Nadal, in the semi final round in three sets. The final
match score was 2-6, 3-6, and 4-6.
In more recent news, the Russian tennis player, Mikhail Youzhny, won the 2010 Malaysian Open after beating Andrey Golubev in three sets in Kuala Lumpur. The final match score was 6-7(7), 6-2, 7-6(3). It was his first championship indoors after the United
States Open and the Russian performed brilliantly well to end as a champion after getting past a couple of strong contenders including Marcos Baghdatis in the quarters and Ignor Andrey in the final four in Kuala Lumpur.
