Brooklyn Nets owner still claiming that the Nets will win a championship within the first five years of his ownership of the franchise, out of which two years have already passed.
The Brooklyn Nets have emerged onto the NBA scene with a bang, having been in the news for months without having even played one game under the new banner. The Nets will move into their brand new Barclays Arena in Brooklyn for
the next NBA season, and owner Mikhail Prokhorov has achieved the first phase of his aim by assembling a star studded roster that will have them in playoff conversation next season.
The Nets have had their fair share of bumps along the way, missing out on the opportunity of landing superstar centre Dwight Howard, and almost losing their franchise player and point guard Deron Williams. They managed to keep
Williams in free agency by giving him a five year max deal, and surrounded him with talent by recruiting Joe Johnson, and re-signing Gerald Wallace and Brook Lopez.
Prokhorov is not used to being unsuccessful in any venture he undertakes, being a billionaire and successful businessman. And so far, his plans for the new team have also progressed as planned. He is still claiming that the team
will fulfil his initial promise of winning an NBA title within five years, out of which two years have already passed.
“The NBA is a very competitive league, and there’s an intense battle not only for players but for fans and advertising as well. So the stronger the competition, the more interesting it is for me. We were never working from a single
game plan. The whole time we had Plan A, B, C, and D. These plans may intersect at some point, but our goal remains the same: Build a championship team and win the title within the first five years. Two years have already passed, so we have three years left.
My plans haven’t changed,” said Prokhorov in an interview with Details Magazine.
The Nets are now in Brooklyn, and will fiercely contest the New York Knicks for fan loyalty and support. They have a great team on paper, one that is capable of turning a few heads and surprising people. However, they are yet to
play a game as the Brooklyn Nets, in their new uniform, in their new arena, with their new stellar line-up. Hence, up till now, it has all been talk. Now they have to take the basketball floor and actually play the game and prove their owner right.
