Mikhail Youzhny drops opening match against Florian Mayer at the 2011 Monte Carlo Masters
Tenth seed Mikhail Youzhny suffered a shocking defeat in the first round of the ongoing 2011 ATP World Tour Masters 1000 Monte Carlo, going down in three sets to unseeded pro Florian Mayer of Germany. The match was over in two
hours and four minutes, with a score-line of 6-3, 2-6, 6-3.
Youzhny is currently ranked World Number 14, and is 28 years old. The player hails from Moscow, Russia, and has been part of the Association of Tennis Professionals for almost twelve years. He has won seven career titles to date
since his pro career began in 1999. On the other hand, Florian Mayer currently resides in Germany and is ranked World Number 35. The player, who is 27 years old, has not won any career titles so far. He began playing tennis in a professional capacity ten years
ago in 2001, and has been having a good run so far this year. The player has won fifteen of the twenty-four matches he has taken part in so far this season.
The match was a challenging and gruelling one for both players, with Mayer winning the opening and closing sets. He fired four aces during the match and committed six double faults, a mistake he somewhat made up for by breaking
Youzhny seven times. The German pro himself was broken six times during the match. He concluded the match by taking nine points more than Youzhny, crushing him with 53 per cent of the total points in the match. The battle consisted of a total of thirteen service
and return games for both players.
Their head-to-head record is now 4-3 to Florian Mayer, who also defeated Youzhny in their last meeting. That encounter was at the 2010 ATP World Tour Masters 1000 Shanghai last year, and Mayer prevailed over his opponent in three
lopsided sets to proceed to the round of the last 32 with a 6-4, 5-7(5), 6-1 score-line.
Florian Mayer will now face either Sergiy Stakhovsky of Ukraine or qualifier Frederico Gil of Portuguese in the second round at Monte Carlo.
