Miki Saiki surges into clubhouse lead with a 67 at Evian Masters
Japanese golfer Miki Saiki smashed a score of five-under-par 67 in the second round of the $3.25-million Evian Masters to surge into an outright lead. The Ladies Professional Golf Association (LPGA) Tour event is taking place at the Evian-les-Bains Golf
Club in France.
The 26-year-old from Hiroshima stepped into the second round with a score of 68 and fired five birdies to compile a score of 31 on the front. She attacked one more hole for a birdie, but dropped a shot at the immediate hole, sealing the back at par.
The three-time winner on the Japanese Tour struggled a bit towards the end of the day, however, she was satisfied with her game overall. She took the reporters through her day’s play at the press conference
“Yesterday I was hitting the ball really well, and it kind of continued on to today. I was able to hit well and also putt well earlier in the round. I kind of struggled in the end, but all in all, it was a good day. Yesterday obviously was a day of a lot
rain and you didn't know what you were going to get. Today you had no wind.  The greens were consistent with the rolling,” she said.
Saiki was chased by a group of five players, which included Angela Stanford, Stacy Lewis, Ai Miyazato, Shin-Ae Ahn and Maria Hjorth.
Stanford compiled the lowest score of the day with the help of eight birdies and one double-bogey. The American made good use of the pleasant conditions to wipe off the strains from the opening round, which was paralysed by rain and strong winds.
Meanwhile, Lewis carded a 67 on Friday to shed off the marks from the previous round. The American led the field until the fifteenth hole, where she encountered a double-bogey and then dropped a shot at the closing hole to let go of the lead.
The winner of the Kraft Nabisco Championship was happy with her finish. Lewis revealed to reporters that her idea was to stay calm after the first round and not think too much about it. Her calmness certainly showed in the second round as she ended up in
the tie by the end of the 36th hole.
