Mikka Sheridan claims Girls 200m backstroke gold: Day five – Australian Age Championships, Brisbane
Mikka Sheridan of Chandler claimed gold medal of the Girls 200m backstroke in the age group of 17-18 Year Olds on fifth day of the 2012 Australian Age Championships at the Sleeman Sports Complex, Brisbane on Friday, April 13.
The 17-year-old Sheridan stayed prominently ahead of her challengers throughout the four-lap event and hit the finishing wall for gold medal by clocking a time of 2 minutes and 11.95 seconds.
Her mind-blowing performance remained 1.58 seconds ahead of Jordan White of Cranbrook, who earned silver medal of the discipline by posting a time of 2 minutes and 13.53 seconds.
The 18-year-old White was followed by Madison Wilson of St Peters Western Swim Club, who occupied bronze medal of the discipline by posting a time of 2 minutes and 16.70 seconds.
The second event of the session was 200m backstroke in Boys 17-18 Year Olds age group, where Mitch Larkin proved his audacity for the crown of the discipline by hitting the wall with the timing of 1 minute and 59.90 seconds.
The 18-year-old Larkin was followed by Corey Main of New Zealand, who stayed just 0.40 seconds behind and hit the wall for second position by clocking an effort of 2 minutes and 00.30 seconds.
Main was trailed by Ryan h**e of Woden, who stayed nearly three seconds behind and posted a time of 2 minutes and 03.86 seconds for bronze medal of the event.
Following that, Delainee Melia of Bayside stunned the audience by snaring gold medal of the 400m freestyle in Girls 12-13 Year Olds category.
The 13-year-old Melia devastated hopes of her opponents and settled on the finishing end for gold medal by posting a time of 4 minutes and 18.54 seconds.
Melia was trailed by Tamsin Cook, who remained almost two body lengths slower from her former finisher and posted an effort of 4 minutes and 22.19 seconds. Cook was chased by Chelsea Gubecka, who ended third with the timing of 4 minutes and 24.14 seconds.
Furthermore, the session ended after the completion of all planned events while the winners were awarded medals for their notable efforts after the session.
