Mikkel Kessler calls off bout with Robert Stieglitz to recover from hand surgery – Boxing news
Mikkel Kessler, former WBC and WBA super middleweight champion, who was scheduled to take on Robert Stieglitz, the current WBO super middleweight champion, has decided to drop his April 14, 2012 skirmish since his hand surgery needs almost one more month
to recuperate.
According to the tidings, Mikkel was bound to fight Robert for his WBO title but unfortunately, as per the physician’s advice, Kessler still needs time to recover from last year’s hand surgery. Kessler in a short interview revealed his decision and apologised
his fans for the inconvenience adding that he will most probably make a comeback on May 19, 2012.
Mikkel, 33, is one of those pugilists who have an impressive rather intimidating resume. The Danish proud has fought 46 bouts and came out victorious in 44. He has collected a whopping 33 of his wins by knockout.
The orthodox stance Mikkel has successfully won and retained many titles most significant being World Boxing Association’s and World Boxing Council’s super middleweight titles. Well known as the ‘Viking Warrior’, Kessler is one of the two guys who were successful
in nailing the British pounder Carl Froch.
Mikkel has lost only two bouts in his long illustrious career, one against Andre Ward and second against Joe Calzaghe. Kessler last fought in June 2011 and collected a technical knockout win over Mehdi Bouadla since then he has been out of action mostly
because of the hand surgery.
Mikkel while breaking the news said, “I hate to keep my fans waiting and I am really sorry about the delay. As a boxer, my fists are my biggest weapon. To fight and to win at the highest level, I need my hand to be fully recovered. Unfortunately, the April
14 date comes just a little too early but I will be ready on May 19. I have kept my shape and can´t wait to be fighting again in front of my Danish fans.”
Kalle Sauerland, Mikkel’s promoter, also put forth his thoughts and said that we sincerely apologise for the cancellation of the engagement adding that we cannot put at risk the Danish Viking’s well being.
Kalle was of the view that Kessler has the ability and guts to beat any opponent just by one hand but the five-week delay decision was necessary. Sauerland remarked that Mikkel’s fans should wait just five more weeks and then they will witness the world
number six super middleweight pummel each and every man in the division brutally.
