Milan Jovanovic reveals that he rejected offer from Real Madrid
The new Liverpool striker Milan Jovanovic has just informed that he refused an offer from Real Madrid to come to the Spanish club. He has stated that he had favoured the Reds from his heart and hoped to have good career at Anfield.
The 29 year old Serbian player has arrived at the Merseyside from Belgium at the Standard Liege. He commented that one of the reasons he came to Liverpool was that he wanted to play for the club and prove his worth to them. He also mentioned that had he gone for the Bernabeu option he would have been lost in the star studded team without a chance but at the Reds he has a better chance of showing his skills and proving that he is worth something.
While talking to the media Jovanovic stated, “I think 99 per cent of people I spoke to told me they did not understand why I said no to Real”. He added, “But maybe I am special. I thought if I went it would be as an ordinary player, but that, if I stayed, I would be where I felt good, where I was a star in Belgium”.
For the Standard Liege Jovanovic has played 114 matches and has scored 52 goals and last season he had 30 appearances in which he produced 13 goals.
The Serbian star who gave a superb performance in the FIFA 2010 World Cup said, “It is only a small league, but Standard Liege won two titles and two Super Cups while I was there. So I was very happy”.
The new coach of Real Madrid Jose Mourinho has indeed brought on a long list of players that he has bid on and it would be no surprise if Jovanovic was one of them. Having a large amount to spend on players this summer the Portuguese manager is bidding on the top players in clubs.
Jovanovic has stated, “Real offered me just a one-year deal with an option for two years. I said four, they said no and so I turned them down. Maybe they are the biggest club in the world, but I always knew that other big clubs would come”.
He added, “I will never go somewhere where I only play a small part. Why? It is better to be happy somewhere. Now I only want to look forward and play for Liverpool”.
Though the Liverpool manager Roy Hodgson has stated that he is happy with signing he has also told that Liverpool will face a lack of experienced players this season. He has been in a dilemma if to play his star players and the ones that have returned from the 2010 World Cup in South Africa. Playing them in the Europa Cup will mean risking them for the rest of the season especially in the Premier League in which it is crucial for them to give a good performance and enter at least the Top 4 so that they can qualify for next to next seasons Champion League.
Liverpool finished 7th last season, failing to qualify for the Champions League this time. The manager has stated that if he plays his star players now then there is a higher risk of exhaustion and injuries.
Anfield is still trying to obtain some more new blood to pump into the team and the signing of French and Dutch striker from AC Milan Loic Remy and Klaas Jan Huntelaar seems near. Along with them the defenders Luke Young of Aston Villa and Wayne Bridge of Manchester City are close to signing a deal with the Reds.
Liverpool will get the funds for these signings by selling off a bunch of players from their club along with some allowance from their owners Tom Hicks and George Gillett. However clubs like Inter Milan, Chelsea, Real Madrid and Manchester City are still bidding for top players so things are still stirring in the pot. Dirk Kuyt, Steven Gerrard and Fernando Torres are still receiving offers though they have claimed that they are not going to leave Reds.
