Milano-Torino to make a comeback in 2012
The European single day cycling race, Milano-Torino is making its come back after a break of five years. The 2012 edition of the race is scheduled on September 26, 2012.
Giro d’ Italia organisers, RCS Sport, are the main sponsors behind the race and they have signed an agreement with Associazione Ciclistica Arona for the next three seasons.
The race is considered as one of the oldest classic Italian races, with its roots going back to 1876.
Paolo Magretti won the inaugural edition of the race. The race traditionally took place in March but it was pushed forward to October in 1987.
Milano-Torino became part of “Trittico di Autunno” and was held along with the Giro del Piemonte and the Tour of Lombardy.
The most recent edition of the race was held in 2007 and the Italian cyclist Danilo Di Luca claimed the top podium position at the race.
President of AC Arona, Giorgio Sinigaglia told Gazzetta dello Sport, “Milano-Torino is the oldest race in Italy, its first edition took place in 1876 and we’re delighted to organise it”.
He continued, “That first race was won by Paolo Magretti, an engineering student who took part along with seven other riders. They left at 4 in the morning, and Magretti was the first to reach the finish on Via Giulio Cesare in Turin, greeted by a crowd
of over 10,000 people”.
Milano-Torino is a 1.HC ranked European single day race. The event is scheduled between the cities of Turin and Milan with an approximate distance of 200 kilometres.
The race traditionally starts near Milan, in Novate Milanese, and features the climb of evocative Colle di Superga.
After the initial edition of the race back in 1876, organisers failed to hold the event for 18 years until 1894.
The race also missed an appearance during 1895, 1897-1902, 1904, 1906-1910, 1912, 1916, 1926-1930, 1943, 1944, 1986, 2000 and from 2007-2011.
Milano-Torino 2007 concluded near the Turin’s Corso Casale. The final route of the Italian race has not yet been released but it is believed that the race will feature the famous Novate Milanese and will conclude at the Fausto Coppi Velodrome.
