Question:

Mile run and track help?

I started running about 4 weeks ago but ive run 6 days a week since then. I've started recently going to the local track and running the mile there instead of cross country. My best time so far is 7 minutes. Now, my question is: can i get this time to 6 minutes or under by spring? If so, how? My next is: can you listen to music during track workouts (such as warmups on a track team)? Thanks already.

  1. If you've only been running for a month you should not be running almost every day  That's for starters.

If you want to improve your time over a mile you need to start running further than a mile.  Your speed will come with endurance.

Whether you can shave a minute off your mile PB depends on whether you'll injure because at the moment you're on your best way to an overuse injury.

Run 4 days a week, ideally not on consecutive days.  One longer run building by 10% each week, one f**t-lek (intervals run), one 1 mile time trial and one recovery run.

Dont run to music if you're serious - its a distraction from your breathing etc plus you end up running o the beat rather than the pace you should be training to.

  2. If you continue to run 6 days a week every week you should get down in to the low 6's at least. To be sure however i would also mix in some interval work. This means go to the track and run a lap at slightly faster then mile pace. Then run a slow lap to recover. Then run the next lap again at slightly faster then mile pace etc.etc. And if you're not doing interval work i would advise that your runs should be at least three miles each. Don't train to run a mile by running just one mile.

  3. You should be able to run a mile in six minutes if  you continue to train.

Run distance 4 days each week, and do some intervals where you run parts of the  mile at your race pace with short rests two days each week.

Most coaches do not allow you to listen to  music during practice.
