Question:

Military Bonus and other questions?

After H.S. I'm thinking more and more about enlisting in the Navy, but I'm open to AF or CG, then going to college at NA or CGA, or a civilian college and go through OCS and become and officer in the Navy or Coast Guard. But I'll probably only do this if I can't get into Notre Dame, CGA, or NA the first time around after H.S. ( I have a pretty good shot, so far 4.1 GPA, 4.25 is highest, Eagle Scout, a few other things).

So, for enlisting, I'm thinking more Navy and the main reason I would be enlisting is to get the GI Bill to pay for college and 3 years of military service probably looks pretty good on college apps and I'd only be 21 when I get out.

Then I was wondering about the bonus: Would I get one? I know it depends on what job they are trying to get you to do but would I get one for good grades or having a good ASVB test? Would I be disqualified because I'll only want to be in for 36 months, enough to get full GI Bill.

Also, being enlisted E-3(Entering as an Eagle Scout) , how likely would I be to get the tour I want, shore job at Pearl Harbor or a ship stationed there? The can't put that in my contract unless I going into a field that is really needed, or not? This probably sounds really snobbish and pompous but I was born there and I'd love to go back and live there.

Thanks

  1. I got a $5000 shipping bonus for leaving a week earlier to Marines Boot Camp...after taxes it was like $3000.

  2. minimum Navy contracts are FOUR years, there are no 3 year ratings.

Most bonuses only come with  5 and 6 year ratings. bonuses are entirely dependent on college credits and rating.  your grades and ASVAB score would have no bearing.

as for assignment: ZERO.   you cannot get that in an initial contract and where you get sent depends on your rating.   EVERYBODY wants Pearl, so the only way you'd get it is if you graduated 1st in your A school class and there was an open billet to pick.

  3. well the bonus depends on the job that you qualify for and not all jobs are offering a bonus. in the navy you take a 4 year tour. if you get a bonus of say 8000, then you get 2000 a year, each year.

as for where you get stationed? depends on 2 things. 1 being, do good in school after bootcamp. if you are the top in the class, you pick where you want to go (this doesnt happen 100% of the time though). and 2, it really comes down the needs of the Navy. And odds are, your going to Sea duty, before  you'll ever see shore duty. My husband is trying to get into Hawaii, but so does everyone, it's hard to get there. i wish you the best of luck, you sound very smart and i hope you get what you are hoping for.
