Military Call to get his head in front in Scottish Racing Apprentice Handicap at Musselburgh
Alistair Whillans’ 5-year-old trainee, Military Call, has run very well on all three starts this season and is expected to put in an extra effort to ensure the first rank in the Scottish Racing Apprentice Handicap at Musselburgh on Friday, August 10th.
The 5-year-old was impressive at the end of last season, when finishing third here in last October. Owned by Play Fair Partnership, the bay gelding continued his good work at Musselburgh, and grabbed the fourth place on his seasonal debut in June.
The Pentland Land Rover Handicap saw him missing the third position only by a short head’s distance. The son of Royal Applause raised his game to notch up the second position in the Racing Post Form With totepool Mobile Handicap (Div I) at Ayr last month.
He displayed another fascinating show at Ayr, when he managed to end up among top-3 in the Bettor.com Finale Last Chance To Bet Apprentice Handicap. His recent performances show how good rhythm he is in, and he just needs a slice of luck to unchain the shackles.
The 1-mile meeting has attracted nine quality runners, who will pursue a cash prize of £3,235. The officials at Musselburgh are due to start the class 5 event at 17:00 GMT.
Last Destination is the biggest threat to Military Call. The 4-year-old is not one of the consistent runners, but one cannot ignore him after his recent strike at Beverley.
In the hands of Silvestre De Sousa, the Nigel Tinkler-trained surprised everyone by upsetting the 9-2 joint favourite, Sir Trevor, by a neck’s distance in the Tyregiant.com Handicap.
Mujaadel won on seasonal debut, but quickly went off the boil. Collateral Damage was disappointing on last occasion. Cannon Bolt nicked a race from the front here in May, but high in weights now.
Goldenveil has dropped a long way down the weights, but needs to perk up. Ra Junior is on a handy mark, but his last two efforts were not impressive.
