Military Commission Act: Safeguard of Freedom or Violation of Bill of Rights?

Personally, I think it's a very narrow minded and stupid act. It gives the whole world the image that America is very similar to the novel "Animal Farm", where everyone is equal, but some are more equal than others.

So, does this mean that habeas corpus is given to everyone, but some people get more than others?

In my eyes, if America wants to be a true global power, we need to stop treating people who don't agree with us like ****.

  3. YOU ARE RIGHT AMERICA WANTS TO BE A TRUE GLOBAL BUT IT IS SOWING THE SEEDS OF ITS OWN DOOM. HISTORY REPORTS THAT GLOBAL POWERS OR EMPIRES RISE AND FALL. OUR EXISTENCE IRRITATES OUR GODLESS ENEMY (CHINA) WHO WOULD LOVE TO END OUR DAYS AS A SOVEREIGN POWER. WHEN  THAT HAPPENS, THE WORLD WILL FIGHT OVER OUR BONES LIKE STARVING DOGS. MAYBE THE NATIVE AMERICANS WILL FINALLY GET THEIR LAND BACK.

  4. Violation.  Second Amendment will take care of this.

  5. Before you can make an intelligent comment on this you have to be aware of all of the issues.

The military commissions act is a compromise that attempts to both provide fair trials to the defendants while at the same time protecting our military and intelligence secrets.  People forget that the last time we tried a conventional trial of an Al Queda member - his lawyer passed on the names of every spy we had in Pakistan and Afghanistan to AQ headquarters.  Fortunately we were able to save the lives of about 2/3rds of them.

BTW - are you aware that the military commissions act provide more protections for the accused than the courts of any European country?

  6. The Military Commissions Act, like the Patriot Act, is a gross violation of our civil rights.  These laws, which violate the Constitution, are based on the premise that these self-appointed "protectors", are going to defend us from terrorist attacks, at the expense of our freedom.

First, they are responsible for making us the target of terrorists.  Were it not for our interventionist foreign policy, the terrorists would find someone else to attack.  So, if they were concerned about stopping terrorist attacks, they would replace our foreign policy.

Secondly, they are using the threat of terrorism to strip us of our protections under the Bill of Rights.  I don't know about you, but I don't want their protection.  I want my rights.

The Military Commissions Act, illegally "authorizes" secret trials, holding people without charge, depriving them of legal counsel, and even torturing them, as long as some fool decides that they are terrorists.  There have been people treated in this manner, later found to be innocent.  How can we allow our public servants to treat people this way, who have not been convicted of a crime?  In our system, everyone is considered innocent until proven guilty.

Our criminal politicians are making us look like a bunch of thugs.  We need to vote these criminals out of office.

  7. Violation of the Bill of Rights.

There is nothing good about the 'Military Commissions Act' that I have read anyway.  You're right to compare America to Animal Farm.  That's exactly what it is.  And we're probably a little closer to being like '1984' Another George Orwell work.
