  1. First of all there is no guarantee that you will achieve the honor to hold the title Marine or be stationed on Pendleton. Secondly I would not recommend getting married until after you have been through a combat deployment and are an NCO (Cpl or above). The housing for "non rates" is few and far between and not all that great. Yes, if you are married housing is based on your rank. There is Jr enlisted, NCO, Staff NCO, and Officer housing. You will more then likely be offered the oldest housing. Housing lists range anywhere from six months to a year long. BAH if you live on base is also based on rank. While there may be enough for rent some find if much more affordable to live on base where utilities are included. The area around Camp Pendleton is VERY expensive.

What makes you think you will be LCPL? You just seem to be going about this all wrong. Become a Marine first, see what the life is like, and then plan your marriage with what is actually is going on. The Marine Corps life is not for everyone.

  2. You can get a place off base, but it is often more affordable to get base housing.  One issue with base housing is the long waiting list.  As a Lcpl, you would be in multi-family units.  When I got out in 1994, the ones I was in were still in decent condition, but I have no recent information.    My biggest complaint about base housing was that the laundry facilities did not have soft water, so you needed to go off base to do your wash otherwise your whites would turn brown.
