Question:

Military Personnel- Is my Tattoo correct?

This question is meant for anybody currently or formerly in the military or government. I am thinking of getting a tattoo on the back of my leg of an American flag in black and gray and backwards (like facing my body). If you are familiar with these patches it is the urban camouflage version. I am not in the military, just a really patriotic person in general and want to spend my life in politics. I am 23 and may regret getting a tattoo one day, but I will never regret expressing my passion for the United States. I just want to be politically correct with the way my tattoo is being put on, I do not want to offend anybody by putting it on the wrong way or in the wrong color....

  1. The flag on the Army uniforms is backward so that it looks like the flag is flying in a breeze. I remembered my junior high school teacher explaining this to our class years and years ago, so your question remineded me of that and I looked it up and it looks to be true....I would think it would be neat to get a tattoo like that and if anyone ever questioned why your tattoo was backward, rather than saying it's because you want to be like the Army, you could say it's because the flag is a representation of our great country and having it backwards shows that the flag is flying strongly in the breeze.

  2. i know some ex-military people and they have blakc and gray backwards on the arm it is on your uniform

  3. get it tattoed on your right arm!

  4. If you have ever looked at a police officers uniform or a soldiers you will see that the flag is backwards on them

  5. The purpose of having the flag appear backwards is because of the regulation governing the wear of the flag patch/emblem/cloth replica on a uniform. The flag is worn on the right side because the place of honor is to the right. The reason the star field leads dates back to the time when cavalry and infantry units had a standard bearer. The momentum of the charge would cause the flag to stream back. Because the flag is attached at the star field end, it visually makes sense to have it backwards on the right shoulder.

My suggestion would be to have the flag tatooed either on the right side of your arm/shoulder or the right side of your calf (not sure you want to display the flag low...should be high if you want to get really politically correct) with the star field leading in either full colors or subdued black and white.

If you put it directly on the back of your leg i'm not sure which direction it would face since there is no regulation allowing wear of the flag on the back of the uniform.
