Military Spouse-finding transferable quality work?

Ok, I am a former Marine married to a Marine who is now a recruiter. He works constantly (like 05-2100) and we have a child. Childcare here averages 30-45 daily and is only a mon-fri 07-1700, wages are crazy low (740/hr), and it is the boonies. Is there some type of government agency that actually offers help?? Not just a website runaround with cheesy information???? I have lost my rear on this military move, short sold a business and now live were they don’t even post federal opportunities. P.S. I do not wish to go back into business for myself as I will have to move again in 2 years and don’t wish to lose 4000 every three years.

  1. I would talk to DSS, or welfare, they paid half my daycare expenses when I was ana ctive duty soldier and single parent that is if you are not too proud to get help from the welfare system, they will put you in contact with the agency that will evaluate your situation and tell you if you are elagable.

  2. I'm in the same boat. Prior Military (Army), married to another Soldier who is also a Recruiter right now...

    Try these:

    www.usajobs.gov

    or

www.cpol.army.mil   (I know your marine, but try it anyway)

They offer federal jobs, even in places you thought there was no jobs at.

    Good luck!

  3. Perhaps you could bcome an airport screener.  Your military background would help, and pay is pretty good and you  could go to a different airport when you guys move.

  4. Well just to let the person who answered the question down there know, it is possible for a Marine to work those long hours. Especially when they are doing Recruiting or Drill Instructor duty. My husband is currently a DI and he does work from 4 am until 8 pm 7 days a week. Got to love it how people who don't even know like to doubt someone who is actually doing it.

Anyway I can't really answer your question but I can say that we just moved from Camp Pen to Parris Island and I am in the process of looking for a job as well. Sadly, I won't be able to find one that will pay as much as I earned working in the Orange County school system here.

Are you near a base where you can go and check out the spouse employment assistance program? Try the USA jobs website if you haven't already. I totally understand what you are going through...best of luck to you!

  5. Go to school for nursing or to become a teacher. Those positions are in high demand no matter where you go.

You can go to your nearest base employment office and see what is available, find out about local job fairs and companies hiring in your area.

  6. try baby sitting.

  7. Obviously, you are living beyond your means if you cannot make it on his pay plus a minimum wage job. Sorry, but I am not buying the hours you state that he works.
