If a Sailor is assigned to a ship but there has to be another one built, and it takes a while to build a ship, and the sailor has shore duty or land duty, will the sailor ever go on a deployment ??

How long does it take to build a Military Ship ??

  1. Your question is a bit convoluted.

The USS GEORGE H.W. BUSH is presently under construction in Newport News, Virginia and has sailors stationed there.  They will do their normal sea/shore rotation on board her.  If the ship is not completed at the time of their rotation date, they will be sent to their next command.

Depending on the size of the ship, it could take 2 or more years.  The Bush is expected to be delivered late this year.  Her hull was laid in Sept of 2003, christened in Oct of 2006.  Some sailor's sea to shore rotation is 36  - 42 months on board a ship. So it is possible to spend your whole tour for new construction.

For example, the USS Ticonderoga CG-47 (a guided missile cruiser) had her keel laid in January 80, christened in May of 81, and commissioned in January of 83.

  2. I don't quite understand your question.. has he/she been transfered to a pre-commissioning crew ??  Whether or not the deploy will depend on if their transfer date occurs before the ship deploys... (duh)

NORMALLY, a pre-comm crew will be aboard through their first deployment, becoming "plankowners".  Pre-comm is normally considered sea-duty.

  3. I was assigned to pre-com duty on USS ROANOKE (AOR-7).  We were berthed in the barracks and spent a lot of time going to different service schools.  I was sent to Air Conditioning and Refrigeration school in San Diego, Petroleum Handling School in Treasure Island and 40 hours of Leadership Management Education and Training (LMET).  It did not count as full sea-duty but it wasn't all shore duty either.  After the ship was commissioned, it was regular sea-duty.  If  he is on Precom duty, he will be deploying about a year after initial manning strarts.  If he is on DE-com (decommissioning), he'll get orders after the ship is mothballed or sold for razor blades.

  4. Surface ships [called targets] take anywhere from 6 months to a year to build.

Combat vessels [or boats] are built in 2 years.

Pre-Comm crews will spend a year in the shipyard and 2 years at sea on the new boat.
