Question:

Military cargo plane with rotor blades???

Saw it this afternoon, around 3:00, about 10 miles South of D.C.

It looked like a military transport aircraft but had a pair of helicopter rotor blades, one on the end of each wing?

. . . what the heck?

It moved along at a fairly decent clip and had no other obvious means of propulsion other than these two rotors (or possibly oversized props?).

I looked for an insignia, but it was painted solid white, with no markings.

I'm guessing it was a vertical take-off/landing cargo plane, but I've NEVER seen anything quite like it! I almost drove off the road staring at the thing . . .

I guess I'm looking for a Mfgr and model number for the thing, or a website with some technical data.

  1. Yes, that is the (discontinued) V-22 Osprey, there's still a few flying for testing purposes, but no formal contracts exist to continue their development for now. Neat aircraft!

  2. It is called an aspire or an  osprey

It has wings with props at both ends of the wing that can turn form horazontal to varietal . It can land like a helacopter or an air plain

  3. It was an V-22 Osprey, probably US Marine Corps. I saw it also over the Potomac River heading towards DC from the south.

  4. It looks like you've seen a V-22 Osprey. It is a powered lift aircraft. The links below would give what you are searching for.
