Does the Sergeant Major of the Marine Corps, who has say 30 some odd years under his belt, have to salute a freshly commissioned, day old 2nd Lt. who is maybe 20 years younger than him?

  1. Yes, he/she must.

    -see AR 600-25

  2. Of course..

People blow this concept way out of proportion way to much about years in service..

The concept is very simple..Enlisted salutes all officers no matter who has bigger balls or has served in what wars or who has more years under their belt..All that non sense is very irrelevant..

  3. Yes, we do salute the "uniform" of an officer, not necessary a person wearing the uniform.

  4. Yep. Sucks to be him doesn't it.

  5. That's correct.

But remember that a salute has two parts. The Sergeant Major INITIATES a salute, and the young butter bar salutes him in return.

And that butter bar had better get that salute up quickly when he sees a salty cover, because otherwise his *** is toast.

  6. You're saluting the rank; not the person wearing it!

  7. Yes he would, but remember we are paying respect to the rank not the person wearing the rank......I have saluted my fair share of idiots.

  8. Yes

  9. Yes. The first day of commissioning, that wet behind the ears 2nd Lt. is still of higher rank than the longest serving E9
