  1. I don't know the percentage.

I've only been through one deployment, my husband has been through two, and both units he went with didn't lose anyone. The unit he's in now, I think the last time they were deployed they lost a couple.

Anytime a unit is deployed there is NO guarantee that everyone will come home. For one they are going to a war zone, there are IED, mortars, insurgents, suicide bombers, etc.  A lot does have to do with what they are doing downrange. You are more likely to get attacked doing patrols than you are back at base doing paperwork. Attacks have gone down compared to when we first went into Iraq. Also, it's sad, but there are some people that commit suicide downrange.

Worrying that your hubby is downrange, if he's safe, how he's doing, and the chance that he might not make it back, no matter what his job is, is part of being in the military. However the percentage is much higher that he will come back home.

Just keep in touch with him downrange. Try to keep up with what the unit is doing. Go to frg meetings.  Talk to other spouses. Keep busy. And look forward to R&R and the homecoming.

Deployments are not easy, but she'll be fine.

  2. If you are talking about a unit returning home early then it isn't going to happen.  If you are talking about making it out alive then she just needs to focus on he is coming home.  If she starts thinking about percentages then it will just depress her.  Tell her to just be positive.
